(prensa.com) The use of meters in taxis to determine fares is years away, officials with transit authority ATTT have said.
The meters passed trial runs, but officials said they won’t be required until the majority of the planned construction for the next several years is finished.
ATTT Director Jorge Ricardo Fábrega said that implementing their use now would not be fair to both drivers and passengers. But officials said they are confident the meters will eventually be used.
Taxi union leader Rafael Reyes said that the implementation of the meter would be helpful for drivers as they will be able to use them to contact police for assistance in the event of a robbery.
The meters will also have a GPS system.
Passengers will also be able to receive a printed receipt for their fare, which would be of help to business travelers.
Valerio Rodríguez, who has driven a taxi for 20 years, used the meter for 18 days. He said passengers generally seemed in favor of its use.
