(Panama America) The director of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), Arturo Alvarado reported that March 23 will be a tsunami drill in Panama.
Alvarado says the product will not be made mock of the earthquake of 8.9 magnitude on the richter scale which occurred last Friday in Japan and triggered a tsunami, as planned.
He added that during a meeting with the President of the Republic ordered the purchase of buoys with gauges for Panama to have the latest technology.
As for the criticisms that have arisen against the government’s performance before a tsunami alert, officials said they did the right thing.
“We rely on an Emergency Operations Center and from there it was monitoring what was happening and so we reported to the public,” he said.
Alvarado as they issued an early warning and not an alarm. “Everything was handled in the best way and likewise the people reacted,” he added.
On Friday March 11 Panama was on the list of countries in Latin America on alert for the arrival of a product of the earthquake tsunami that occurred in Japan.
