(The Panama Gringo) With the definition of the “American Dream” changing and ideas regarding how we’re supposed to work and live evolving, the sabbatical can be seen as an excellent route to self discovery, renewed faith or enlightenment of sorts. The word sabbatical is derived from the Latin word sabbaticus which means “ceasing”. Recent economic changes have driven many of us to change what we were previously doing in trade for a different pace. The idea of working hard to gain a higher standard of living, more possessions and ample time to enjoy them in retirement doesn’t have the same appeal anymore.
Perhaps too many of us have seen the fruits of our labors vanish beyond our control. Or, perhaps we have realized that a life spent slaving away and leaving little time for enjoyment still holds the risk of never getting to that light at the end of the tunnel (aka worry free retirement). Our perspectives have changed. Taking time or a sabbatical, to change gears or simply take a breath, seems to be a popular option for many of us in recent years. To many, Panama is the ideal place to escape the harsh reality that their once perfect idea of the American dream is no longer the standard.
Panama offers a plethora of opportunities for the business savvy individual. Panama has a rich history, lively social scene and great weather. It’s the perfect place to begin a new chapter in your life, end an old one, or simply relax and take life in for a bit. You’d think that the recent economical shifts would affect Panama’s tourism or relocation industry; but, Panama is still thriving in that sector. Thousands of Europeans and Americans relocate to Panama every year for extended stays. Perhaps, the Panamanian sabbatical is more profound than we think. Perhaps this hectic, unorganized and sometimes plain confusing place is on to something. Taking a break in Panama may be just what the lost soul or downtrodden gringo needs to gain new perspective or find their way. To learn about house swapping opportunities in Panama click here.
