Panama is a hidden gem for surf lovers. Rumor has it that some of the world’s top surf spots are on the pacific coast of this stunning country however the people who know about them and the locals would probably keep them just that, rumors. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting surfers in Panama from Italy, the states, and even some army brats born and raised in panama who still come back every year to soak up the sun and challenge the vicious waves the coast has to offer. Every time I hear about or see a surf competition in neighboring Costa Rica I wonder to myself why big tournaments have yet to set in on Panama.
The steady flow of cargo ships and other vessels moving toward the canal add to the size of the waves that crash on Panamas Pacific shores. The coastline of panama ranges from crisp white sand to sparkling black beaches and is a worthy sight for any visitor. The Azuero Peninsula especially draws attention of surfers from around the world. This region of Panama still remains somewhat untouched by the garish beach resorts and flocks of littering tourists and boasts loads of activities from caving to hiking to world class fishing. However, those who love the sport are drawn in through the little literature out there on surfing in panama, tales of friend or families past ventures, or from the friend of a friend. Either way, those who go and see it for themselves won’t be disappointed. Many surf camps have began in panama in recent years. One of the most popular is Morro Negrito in the Chiriqui province. This private Panamanian surf camp is a great option for anyone who wants to enjoy Panama’s beauty and culture while experiencing the surf.
