Panamanian Govt Breaks Changuinola Agreement

07/12/2011 By Panama Eric

(Prensa Latina) Members of the ng bes buglé indigenous community and union leaders denounced that the Panamanian government has failed to fulfill the Changuinola agreement, after the massacre committed two years ago.
On the second year of the violent repression, indigenous people and workers went to the streets of the economic capital of Bocas del Toro province, demanding an answer from the government with regards to the agreement.

On July 8, 2009, a few months after assuming power, the administration of Democratic Change imposed a legislation agreed in private, which was strongly rejected.

Neighbors from Bocas del Toro publicly protested the legislation, and they were violently suppressed. About ten people died, and 716 were injured, including 44 policemen, according to a special report by the People’s Ombudsman. The law was annulled.
