(Prensa.com) Energy ministers from Latin America, during a meeting in Panama on Friday, admitted that clean energy is essential for the sustainable development of countries in the region.
During the hemispheric gathering of the Energy and Climate Alliance for the Americas, which culminated in Panama City after two days of meetings, participating countries pledged to expand cooperation to face challenges in the field of energy, that lead to climate change.
The event was also attended by representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Institute of the Americas, and the Organization of America States (OAS).
Juan Manuel Urriola, Panama’s Secretary of Energy, said that, in the face of the energy crisis, the countries of the OAS formed working groups to share experiences, learn from the strengths, and recognize the weaknesses of each country.
With this measure, said Urriola, each country can move forward as needed.
In the case of Panama, the Secretary of Energy said the government is working to achieve “energy efficiency,” adding that Panamanian authorities are looking to create incentives for the production and promotion of biofuels in the country.
In fact, this past Thursday, April 7, the National Assembly approved – in third debate – the draft law establishing a system of incentives for the construction and operation of wind farms for the provision of public electricity service.
According to the document, the incentive scheme aims to encourage the diversification of the country’s energy matrix in order to meet the demand for electricity services through renewable sources.
