(prensa.com) Numerous white roses were thrown into the giant car which carried on Tuesday 22 March, the coffin of former Panamanian vice president Guillermo Ford Billy Boyd, who died on Saturday March 19 at 74 years of age.
Panamanians who came to say goodbye to Ford wore mostly white, and rattled pans in the streets, as they did in the era of the dictatorship to demand the fall of military rule in the country.
This was part of the acts that were made to pay tribute to Ford, who was characterized by the struggle against militarism and the pursuit of democracy in the country.
State Funeral
After 7:00 a.m. Today, the coffin containing the remains of Ford came to the Metropolitan Cathedral, home of the state funeral to be held. At that time, the number of people in the place was already considerable.
Apart from the political family of the deceased in the place were quotes the country’s highest authorities, politicians of different groups and citizens who wanted to give him a last farewell.
Then begin the Mass, the Bishop José Miguel Lacunza, who called for keeping the legacy of Ford for the welfare of the country. Lacunza emphasized that scenes like those of Ford, who in 1989 left an image of bloody fighting for democracy, “should never be repeated.”
For his part, Edmund Ford stressed that his father believed that politics was to serve others and not use it.
After the Mass, the coffin left the cathedral in a car bomb. From there the people who were on the outside began throwing white roses, chanting slogans and waving white handkerchiefs to honor the former vice president of Panama.
The funeral procession traveled Central Avenue, Avenue B, Plaza 5 de Mayo, Avenida Justo Arosemena, Calle 50, Via Porras and finally the Avenida Santa Elena to Sercresa facilities, where there will be cremation.
Boyd Ford was vice president of the country during the administration of Guillermo Endara Galimany (1989-1994).
