(Prensa.com) Panama ranked first in container port traffic for Latin America and the Caribbean during 2010, moving 5.5 containers among its ports.
That was the highest total among 20 major container ports in the region.
The 2010 ranking, prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America, indicated that container activity in the region increased 21 percent in 2010, a huge jump from 2009 when this activity shrunk by 6.8 percent. The report stated that 17 of the 20 ports recorded double-digit growth.
In the report, the commission highlighted the necessity of improving the port infrastructure in the region to cope with the growth.
After Panama’s ports, the busiest facility in the region was Santos, Brazil, which recorded growth of 20.7 percent in 2010. Kingston, Jamaica and Buenos Aires, Argentina, were the next busiest ports
