(prensa.com) The Cabinet Council Thursday afternoon approved a measure that would repeal the recently-approved mining reforms that have caused weeks of protests across the country.
President Ricardo Martinelli convened a special meeting of the Cabinet Council to deal with the issue, and the body voted to repeal the reforms. Minister of Commerce and Industry Roberto Henríquez will now present a bill to the National Assembly to repeal the reforms.

The move came after Martinelli met with indigenous leaders in Chiriquí who had spearheaded the demonstrations. After that meeting, he said he would propose the reforms be overturned, saying that surveys show that 75 percent of the population does not want mining expanded.
