(prensa.com) A commission has been formed that will start a consultation process to create new rules to regulate mining activities in the country.
José Muñoz, president of the National Assembly, said that the commission will include representatives from indigenous groups of the Comarca Ngäbe Buglé and legislators from the country’s major political parties. It will examine proposed reforms to the existing laws regulating mining.
“We know that the process will be long,” explained Muñoz.
Most of the meetings will take place in Chiriquí to reduce travel expenses for the indigenous members.
The decision to form the commission was made by the government after weeks of protests against the mining reforms passed by the government earlier this year. In the wake of those protests, the government cancelled the reforms and promised to form the commission to examine the issue in greater detail.
