Panama estimates 225,000 farm animals died during flooding

12/18/2010 By Panama Eric

(prensa.com) The government announced Friday that nearly 225,000 farm animals died during floods that swept across the country earlier this month.

Minister of Agricultural Development Emilio Kieswetter said at a press conference that most of the deaths had taken place in the provinces of Panama, the Darien, and Colon.

The ministry had received reports of 222,000 dead chickens, 2,600 dead cattle and 350 dead pigs.

Kieswetter said that ministry officials had inspected farms in Chepo, where most of the bird deaths had been reported, and found that 100,000 birds had survived and could be used for human consumption.
