(prensa.com) Panama saw the number of reported AIDS cases increase by an average of five a month in 2010 as compared to 2009, health officials reported.
Last year, an average of 34 new patients a month sought treatment at the Santo Tomás Hospital clinic, Coordinator Rigoberto Samaniego said. In 2009, the monthly average was 29 new patients.
Orlando Quintero, director of Organization Probidsida, said he thinks the increase is due to people not realizing the seriousness of the situation, and thus transmitting the disease.
The officials are particularly concerned about the increase in cases in young adults between the ages of 14 and 30.
