Obama will send to Congress FTA with Panama “very soon”

07/20/2011 By Panama Eric

(Prensa.com) Bill Daley, White House Chief of Staff said yesterday American president Barack Obama will send to Congress, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with Colombia, South Korea and Panama “very soon” so they can vote on them.  Last week Daley said it was urgent for Congress to approve those agreements before August recess. Now, Daley said it was possible discussions regarding those regulations could extend even more.  He said “I don’t know if they (the agreements) are going to be approved by August, but we are making advances on it”.Daley and American Trade Representative, Ron Kirk have said it is necessary a fast approval of such treaties, in order to ensure country’s exporters don’t lose market share, in comparison with Canada and European Union which have aimed for their own agreements with these countries.

However, Obama has not officially sent to Congress such three agreements because of republicans’ complaints about the White House plan to include an extension for Trade Adjustment Assistance in South Korea’s treaty.
