(prensa.com) “A Panamanian team of surgeons performed the first liver transplant in Panama, announced today, Monday, officials of the Social Security Fund (CSS).
The general director of the CSS, Guillermo Sáez-Llorens, said the transplant, performed on Friday to a woman of 33 years, “has been successful ” and opens the way for more complex surgeries in this country.
“There is a different way of providing health care in Panama, ” said Saez-Llorens congratulating the interdisciplinary medical team ensured the success of liver surgery, and two kidney transplants from a single donor with brain death.
The national executive director of Health Services and Facilities in the CSS, Lizka Richards, said the patient who received the donor liver is recovering well after surgery which required about 12 hours.
He added that the surgery made a chance for life for the recipient of 90% over the next five years and 70% in the next 10 years.
