Fire Consumes 56 Kuna Yala Homes

(Panama Digest) A fire broke out in the Kuna Yala community of Playon Chico early Saturday, leaving 351 people homeless 56 houses destroyed.

The National Civil Protection Service sent a plane with food, bottled water, blankets, chainsaws and hammocks, among other items.  No injuries have been reported.

Playa Chicon or Ukupseni is one of the most populous islands in the Kuna Yala, an autonomous territory or comarca along the Caribbean coast of Panama and home of the indigenous Kuna people.

Last year, a fire sparked by a kerosene lamp destroyed 11 houses and left 72 people homeless in Kuna Yala.
