Closing of Panama’s Centennial Bridge causes traffic jams

12/13/2010 By Panama Eric

(prensa.com) The closing of the Centennial Bridge, across the Panama Canal, caused traffic jams yesterday, Sunday, between Panama City and the countryside.  Particularly affected were passenger buses and trucks full mobilization charge.

The Ministry of Public Works announced the closure of the Centennial Bridge on Saturday due to damage to the access roads leading to it, which was the result of the devastating rains that have fallen in the country over the past week.

As such, access to the countryside is now limited to the Bridge of the Americas, and cargo and heavy equipment will have time restrictions for when they can use that bridge.

Meanwhile, Arturo Alvarado, Director of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), said he was considering the creation of a sovereign disaster fund, which would reach the populations of the provinces of Colón, Darién, Panama, and the Kuna Yala indigenous region.
