(RTTNews) – United Nations negotiations on international action to combat climate change will resume in Panama on Saturday.
The week-long conference in Panama City will be the third session of official-level talks held to prepare the UN climate conference in Durban, South Africa at the end of this year.
Durban conference is the latest in a series of efforts to agree on a road-map for reaching a comprehensive and legally binding global framework for climate action with broad international participation, and to resolve ongoing negotiations on the future of the Kyoto Protocol.
Durban is also a platform to take the necessary decisions to bring last year’s Cancun agreements into operation while also addressing key issues left aside in Cancun, such as the creation of new carbon market mechanisms and action to address emissions from international aviation and shipping.
The Polish Presidency of the European Council and the European Commission are representing the European Union at the meeting. The EU is looking to the Panama meeting to prepare a negotiating text for Durban, the European Commission said in a statement on Friday.
