Africanized bees causing problems in Panama

04/17/2011 By Panama Eric

(Prensa.com) The proliferation of Africanized bees in Los Santos has caused a number of problems recently in several communities.
While no serious injuries have been reported, firefighters have been called repeatedly to disperse swarms of bees that have invaded churches, schools and even a cemetery.
Anastasio Bernal, of the community of Los Olivos, said people int he community are worried because, “when these bees attack, they are capable of ending a person’s life.”
Los Santos Fire Chief Claudio Escalona blamed the problem on a heat wave that has hit the Azuero region. The bees often seek out cooler places, such as the interiors of churches and schools, to escape the heat.
The Los Santos Fire Department has received up to six bee-related calls a day during the recent heat wave, he said.
