(Prensa.com) An estimated 30 species of shorebirds pass through the Bay of Panama every year during the migratory season. This, according to Director of the International Migratory Bird Society, Rosabel Miró.
According to recent scientific studies on this phenomenon, some two million birds of different species form part of the migratory process in Panama, as they travel between South and North America, said the expert.
The activist added that the route of the Bay of Panama is also used by about one million migratory birds of prey, that fly nearby Ancon Hill.
According to Miró, during migration, many of these species face the threat of being caught by collectors, who then keep them in cages as pets or put them up for sale on the black market.
The expert said that the presence of these birds in Panama is an indicator of environmental health in the country.
According to the Audubon Society of Panama and the National Environmental Authority (ANAM), Panama has approximately 976 species of native birds; exceeding the joint list of the United States and Canada.
