(prensa.com) There were more than 2,250 hectares of forests, mangroves and pastures damaged by fires during 2010, national environmental authority Anam reported Thursday.
“Some 86 fires occurred in Panama in 2010, most of them in the provinces of Coclé, Chiriquí, and the Panama City area,” said Helvecia Bonilla, Anam’s head of natural disasters.
Forest and mangrove fires totaled 726 hectares, while agricultural fires, including grasslands, pastures and crops, comprised the rest, the official said.
Bonilla said most of the fires were started by people.
